Incidents

21st January 2012 11.29hrs Above Cove Bridge, Walnar Scar SD271964

Coniston had suffered galeforce winds over night which were continuing during the day in unexpected heavy gusts.

Unfortunately a female walker was blown onto some rock whilst walking near Goatswater. Her walking companions were able to assist her to the Walnar Scar track. However as she had sustained a head injury and was suffering from concussion the team was called out. This was mainly because due to the location, an ambulance was unable to get close enough. She was given oxygen at the scene.

Fortunately, the air ambulance was able to attend and after some excellent flying in poor conditions, the casualty was airlifted to Furness General Hospital.

8th January 2012 11.20hrs Hodge Close/Holme Fell NY312013

A mountain biker came off his bike sustaining a deep laceration to his knee.

One of the team members was in a position to actually pick this casualty up and bring him to the base, whilst his friends took care of his bike. At the base his wound was re-dressed and due to the nature of the injury he was given antibiotics.

Rather than call for an ambulance, the gentleman was able to make arrangements for someone to drive him to Furness General.

It is not often we get the luxury of treating a casualty at the base !

2nd January 2012 14.25hrs Miners Bridge Track SD288983

A female walker slipped on the main path leading from Miners Bridge to Windy Gap.

She sustained a possible fracture to her ankle. The leg was splinted and she was stretchered to the landrover. Later she was then taken by ambulance to hospital.

A relatively easy start to the beginning of the 2012 call outs.

14th December 2011 20.00hrs High Arnside/Iron Keld NY335006

The Team was asked to assist the Ambulance Service with the evacuation of a mountain biker who had come off his bike. The track could only be negotiated by a 4 x 4 vehicle.

Sadly this incident was a fatality.

28th November 2011 15.15hrs Coniston Old Man Area

The police alerted us to the fact that someone had heard cries for help in the Coniston Old Man area.

A call out like this can present problems as we usually do not have a definitive grid reference. This means the team has to search for a casualty and even then we do not know if the person/s are hurt. We would also have to take ropes in case any climbing is involved.

However, in this instance, a phone call to the local farmer soon relaxed our concerns. He was working his sheepdogs in the area at the same time the police received the message. It can be difficult to identify the difference but it seemed too much of a coincidence. Also no one else had reported an emergency or hearing any shouts for help.

Therefore the team stood down, but aware that if this had been a genuine call out we should get a further call later. In fact, we didn't.

1st November 2011 15.17hrs Levers Water SD282991

The Team was called out to a female walker who had slipped whilst descending the footpath leading from Levers Water down into Coppermines Valley.

It was damp and slippy underfoot, not helped by the steep, wet rough ground by the side of the waterfall. She had suffered a possible fracture to her wrist.

The wrist was splinted and put in a sling, and the casualty was able to walk the relatively short distance to the waiting landrover. On arrival back at the base an ambulance was waiting to take her to hospital.

27th October 2011 15.35hrs On footpath above Far End SD303989

High on the footpath above Far End a female mountain biker slipped and landed on her left hand. It was thought that she may have dislocated her elbow.

Fortunately the Air Ambulance was able to land on the fell and attend to her. The casualty was supported by team members as she walked the 100 metres to the helicopter.

A relatively short call out of about 1 1/4 hrs due to the location to the village.

3rd October 2011 14.30hrs Grizedale Forest SD341971

We have had a number of call outs this year to mountain bike accidents. Fortunately, due to the nature of the sport, access is usually quite simple.

In this incident, a male biker came off his bike whilst negotiating part of the North Face Trail. This route is popular but can be quite taxing resulting in a number of accidents each year. The casualty sustained an ankle injury and the team deployed two landrovers to assist him.

However, an ambulance had been guided to the location and the team was stood down.

As I said earlier, most times these call outs are quite short because paramedics are usually able to have quick and easy access to the casualties.

29th September 2011 12.30hrs Parkamoor (Grizedale Forest) SD323923

A mountain biker suffered damage to his knee when his bike slipped from underneath him. He hit a rock with his knee causing the injury.

Whilst he was being assessed by the team the NWAA was able to land within the area. A paramedic was then taken to the biker and treated him.

The team stretchered the casualty to the waiting landrover. He was then transported to the helicopter for evacuation to Furness General.

19th September 2011 16.35hrs Coniston Village SD300973

10th September 2011 12.25hrs Belle Grange SD386988

The team was asked to assist the North West Air Ambulance with the evacuation of a mountain biker.

He had fallen off his bike on a greasy paved forest track running from Balla Wray to Belle Grange, above Lake Winderemere. This track is also known as The Coffin Trail" !The Air Ambulance had already arrived at the scene and attended to the casualty who had a suspected broken ankle. However, due to the location a stretcher was needed to evacuate the gentleman to the helicopter.

This was safely and quickly carried out and the team was back at the base within 2 hours.

6th September 2011 14.32hrs Claife Heights SD378975

We were asked to assist the Ambulance Service with the rescue of a female walker who had slipped near the view point on Claife Heights, above Far Sawrey.

She had sustained a possible fracture to her wrist. A paramedic accompanied the team to the casualty along forest tracks. She was given pain relief and her arm was put in a sling. Fortunately she was able to walk down to the waiting landrover before being taken to the ambulance at Far Sawrey.

4th September 2011 16.55hrs Cumbria Way SD298940

A male walker slipped on the Cumbria Way track which ran close to the lake shore of Coniston Water.

Due to the area he was in, it was quicker to access this incident by boat. Three team members took a speedboat dinghy from the main boat moorings next to the ferry terminal on the outskirts of the village. First Aid equipment including a stretcher was also transported this way with the members. The rest of the Rescue Team made their way by road.

We soon located the casualty and apart from the wet feet and ankles attained whilst paddling the few yards to the shore from the boat, we acknowledged this was definitely a good way to arrive on scene.

The walker had sustained a possible sprain or fracture to his ankle. He was given pain relief whilst the limb was splinted and then transferred by stretcher to the waiting landrover.

The casualty was later taken to hospital. A very easy and quite enjoyable call out.

26th August 2011 14.00hrs Grizedale Forest SD331939

A female cyclist came off her bike whilst riding along the North Face Trail.

Unfortunately she landed on a rock and sustained injuries to her left hip, arm and wrist. Whilst the team was assessing the casualty, the paramedics arrived who treated her. She was then put into a vacuum mattress and stretchered to the waiting ambulance.

This is the third mountain bike accident in Grizedale in just over a month !!

21st August 2011 13.10hrs Grizedale Forest SD337977

A male cyclist came off his mountain bike whilst negotiating some very slippery wooden boarding on the North Face Trail.

We were accompanied by paramedics who had been able to drive along the main forestry track. The casualty had sustained a possible fracture to his right hand/wrist. His arm was put into a sling and he was able to walk to the waiting ambulance before being taken to Furness General.

A short call out of 1 hour thanks to the accessibility of the incident and the fact that a stretcher was not required.

19th August 2011 19.11hrs Crinkle Crags NY250050

The team was asked to assist the Langdale & Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team. They had been called out to search for a missing male walker who had become separated from his friend whilst walking over Crinkle Crags.

However, it was decided to standby for a while because they had been camping the night before and therefore, the walker was well equiped. We later got a call to say that he had actually made his way off the fells and returned home !

12th August 2011 16.10hrs Blawith Common SD278895

A female walker slipped on wet ground whilst walking on the fell track between Water Yeat and Beacon Tarn. She sustained a possible fracture to her ankle.

Her leg was splinted before she was stretchered to the waiting ambulance. A damp call out but due to the accessibility it only took us 2 hours.

7th August 2011 18.05hrs Goatswater SD266975

We were called out to assist the Great North Air Ambulance. They had been asked to attend to a female walker who had slipped whilst walking along the side of Goatswater. This is a tarn which lies in the valley between The Old Man of Coniston and Dow Crag. The path can be slippy in wet weather as walkers have to negotiate boulders along the shore.

The casualty had injuries (possible fractures) to her left scapula (shoulder blade), ankle and wrist. She was given pain relief before being stretchered to the waiting helicopter further down the fell.

This was a wet call out with a difficult stretcher carry.

26th July 2011 11.18hrs Red Dell SD285992

A young girl tripped whilst descending the steep path in Red Dell, which lies below Wetherlam.

She sustained injuries to her head as well as injuring her shoulder, elbow and wrist, and also a thumb. Fortunately the Great North Air Ambulance was soon on the scene and they were able to treat her before airlifting her to hospital.

This was a short call out due to the GNAA being in attendance.

23rd July 2011 14.30hrs Grizedale Forest SD340980

A young mountain biker hit a rock and came off his bike whilst negotiating a section of the North Face Trail.

The youth sustained various injuries, including both wrists and elbows. We evacuated him using a vacuum mattress. He was stretchered a short distance to our landrover and then taken to the ambulance which had already arrived at Moor Top. He was later taken to Furness General.

This was not a good start to the summer holidays!

29th June 2011 18.55hrs Claife Heights SD382981

This was a simple rescue this evening.

A male walker with little experience became lost amongst the forest tracks on Claife Heights. Fortunately he was able to describe his whereabouts and was therefore soon located by the team.

When we arrived the ambulance paramedics were already with the injured man. He had come off his mountain bike whilst cycling down some scree. However, they were not far from the road and the casualty was able to walk aided from the scene of the accident to the waiting ambulance. He had also suffered an injury to his knee and was taken to Furness General.

4th June 2011 16.20hrs Coniston Old Man SD269983

The team was called to a female walker who had injured her leg whilst descending to Goats Hause from the summit of the Old Man of Coniston.

We were fortunate that the Air Ambulance was not too far away. They were able to leave a paramedic with the casualty and then pick up members of the team with their equipment from further down the fellside. This was a much less painful way of arriving at the top of a mountain whilst carrying a First Aid sack and stretcher!

The casualty had a suspected fracture to her left leg and was airlifted to Furness General Hospital.

14th May 2011 12.20hrs Hodge Close Quarry NY318019

Once the climber was bandaged and with his arm in a sling, he was able to walk out of the quarry with the help of ropes and assistance by team members.

30th April 2011 15.15hrs Coniston Old Man SD273977

There is nothing like re-uniting a family. In this case it was a family and their dog.

We were called out because a Golden Retriever had become separated from it's family whilst they were negotiating steep unstable ground. They had decided it was safer to let the dog off the lead, but unfortunately it then went missing.

The team already had three members on the summit of the Old Man as we were marshalling a fell race. However, although the dog was in sight, it wasn't keen to be caught by strangers. It certainly gave our members the run around as one minute he was going up, and then he was was going down, and then on the way up again.

It was decided to take the owner back up the fell and head towards Low Water where the dog was last seen. The members already in the area kept us informed where the dog was heading. As soon as we were above the tarn, albeit quite high up, the owner shouted for his dog which then started barking. It took a couple of minutes but lo and behold, a yellow head soon appeared off the main track. Everyone stood still and went quiet as the dog slowly made his way to his owner. As soon as he was safely caught there was a round of applause and sighs of relief all round.

They were accompanied off the fell with the dog safely on the lead. The family and dog would be sleeping happily that night.

With the help of our flashing lights and siren they were able to lead us to their whereabouts, communicating by mobile phone. The party was found safe and well. Don't ask me how but we were able to load all 6 and their large rucksacks into the fairly full landrovers. They were then taken on to their campsite and re-united with the event organiser.

3rd February 2011 17.00hrs Levers Hawse SD270990

This was a memorable night. Three men and a dog were reported as being lost on Coniston Old Man. In total 19 members of the Coniston Team and members from Duddon & Furness Rescue Team were deployed on the mountain. This was because the walkers were reported as not being well equipped and the weather was deteriorating and obviously it was getting dark.

The team was split into small parties each approaching the ridge and searching the area en route where the casualties were most likely to be. We had a description of the immediate spot they were sheltering in, although they were unsure of exactly where they were since the cloud and mist came down.

The main problem was the wind..well, the gales. We all were attacked by 70-80 mile an hour winds, often only able to move during the short lull between the gusts. Much of the time was spent on hands and knees, and in the moments when the gales did not even give us the decency of creeping up slowly, we ended up on backs and bottoms, hips and arms. The rain and mist added to the difficulty and discomfort.

And the good bit....the casualties were eventually found between Brim Fell and Levers Hawse. They were led to safety down to Levers Water and we were all able to find sanctuary in the waiting landrovers. They were cold and wet but well, given the circumstances.

And the damage..apart from the bruising we will have all taken, my little team of three lost a torch and hat, and a walking pole was broken in half...all courtesy of the wind.

However, the best bit of the night was the free drinks and food the local pub put on for us...this was very much appreciated.

14th October 2010 19.40hrs Holme Fell NY317004

A couple wandered off the main path on Holme Fell. They could see the road near Yew Tree Tarn down below so attempted to descend directly down towards it. However, as darkness crept in and the terrain became difficult to negotiate, they decided to call for assistance.

This was quite a difficult rescue because of the steepness and the crags which cling to the edge of Holme Fell. The flashes from the couple's mobile phone indicated their position, and the landrover which was parked opposite the fell, followed the lights from our headtorches and therefore able to advise us how close we were.

Once located, the couple were able to climb back up the fell with the aid of team members. Then it was just a case of walking down the track back to the landrover and their car.

This rescue took 3 1/2 hours. Thank goodness it was a dry, pleasant evening.

2nd October 2010 15.00hrs Torver Common Wood SD296946

The area of the course where the accident happened soon became very slippy due to the previous day's rain. A few runners slipped and we were lucky not to have more casualties. We re-routed the affected part for the safety of the runners.

12th August 2010 17.42hrs Church Beck SD294981

Shortly after our second landrover set off to assist with the Tarn Hows incident, we were asked to attend to a female who had been ghyll scrambling in Church Beck. Church Beck, which runs from the fells through Coniston village to the lake, is very popular with adventure groups taking people on this activity.

The second landrover was therefore redeployed to this very local incident.

The lady had slipped whilst negotiating the waterfalls and suffered a possible broken or dislocated ankle. Her leg was splinted and she was evacuated safely to the base. Soon afterwards the ambulance arrived from the Tarn Hows call out. Both casualties were then taken to Furness General Hospital.

We met up with LAMRT and decided to stretcher the female down and the rest of the family were able to walk unassisted with the teams. This was a good combined effort complete with search and rescue dog. I think everyone was pleased to get back to the waiting landrovers as this was a long hard carry over sometimes rough and slippy track. We were asked to assist the North West Air Ambulance which had been called to the aid of a male climber. He had fallen down Great Gully. The casualty had sustained a serious head injury and possible multiple injuries. The team put the man into a vacuum mattress and stretchered him to a safe point. He was then winched up to a waiting Sea King helicopter and flown to hospital.

20th April 2010 13.10hrs Walna Scar Area SD283966

A couple of walkers heard what they thought were shouts for help. After investigation it was found to be local farmers gathering their sheep on the fell. Good intentions because a farmer's call whilst rounding his flock in this area, can sound similar to "help".

4th April 2010 15.50hrs Great How SD276999

A lone female became cragfast after descending the wrong track from the ridge of Consiton Old Man in mist. This is a common occurance on Great How. She was soon located and belayed to safety unhurt.

6th February 2010 16.20hrs Gill Cove Above Levers water SD273994

A party of 3 men took a wrong path off the summit of the Old Man. One slipped about 40' on snow whilst descending a gully. Two walkers in the vicinity initially helped him and called for the rescue service. He was lucky as he did not appear to have sustained any obvious major injuries. He was roped up and lowered to safety before being accompanied to the landrover and taken to the base.

3rd February 2010 14.20hrs Coniston Old Man SD273977

A female slipped on ice whilst descending from the summit to Low Water. She bruised and grazed her hip. Although able to walk initially, due to the icy conditions, difficult terrain and increasing discomfort, she was stretchered to the waiting landrover. Her father said they would go to their own hospital. Their two little dogs simply enjoyed the fresh falling snow.

30th January 2010 1600hrs Walna Scar SD271965

A female had slipped on ice at Goats Water injuring her wrist. The team set out but whilst making their way along the Walna Scar track they were informed that the Great North Air Ambulance had already arrived and our assistance was no longer required. She was taken by helicopter to Furness General and it has been confirmed that she had broken her wrist. A short call out of less than hour.

4th January 2010 1100hrs Brim Fell SD272985

A couple had spent the night on Coniston Old Man and requested assistance when cloud came down the next morning. They were located on Brim Fell. The female had sustained a possible fracture to her wrist and injury to her ankle. They were given hot drinks. As she was still able to walk without much difficulty both were fitted with crampons and accompanied down off the fell to the waiting landrover.

This was quite a long call out due to the snow and icy conditions (approx. 4 hrs)

30th December 2009 1025hrs Southern Slopes of Old Man SD273975

To escape a snow blizzard a party of 4 left the main track whilst on their way up Coniston Old Man to skirt the breast of the southern slopes. Unfortunately, one male became stuck on a ledge due to the conditions. The Rescue Team was split into two parties. The man was located above Cove Quarries unhurt. He was accompanied down to the waiting Landrover.

21st December 2009 2230hrs Torver Back Common SD287927

A female was reported missing from home and concern was expressed as she was not dressed for the weather conditions (snow). Request for assistance to help with the search was made to SARDA (for dogs), RAF Kinloss (for helecopter) and Duddon & Furness Mountain Rescue. The snow was falling and was forecast to continue hence the additional help. Two landrovers went out to rendevous with the police who had found her car close to Sunny Bank. However, shortly after the actual search commenced the team found the woman in Torver Beck. She was cold, wet and hypothermic but breathing. Oxygen was given and she was put into a warm casualty bag. She was stretchered to the landrover which then took her to the ambulance waiting at Lowick Green as bad road conditions prevented it from getting any further along the main road. She was taken to Furness General. This was a successful call out in terms of time spent searching. Total time from original call out to return to base was approx. 2 1/4 hours.

20th December 2009 1230hrs Tranearth, Torver, SD283956

With chains on the wheels of the landover, we responded without problem in the snowy conditions, to a male walker who had slipped on ice. His friends had been able to carry him to the climbing hut on a ladder. He had twisted his left knee which we splinted before stretchering him to the waiting landrover. Due to the poor road conditions we drove on to Lowick rather than returning to the base. An ambulance was able to get there and took the casualty to hospital.

19th November - 23rd November 2009 Coniston/Hawkshead

Due to the heavy rain and consequent flooding, the team was asked by the police to be on standby to assist as and when required. Various members attended to requests for help throughout the area during this period.

20th November 2009 1020hrs Cockermouth

The team were asked to assist with the evacuation of people from the centre of Cockermouth due to the flooding. We split into two teams, those who were swift water trained took the boat, and the other team were sent to check the alleys leading from the main street. One soon got used to the cold water but not the devastation caused by the flood. We worked with other rescue services and were fed and watered by volunteers. We arrived home 8 hours later after the evacuation was more or less complete, but were asked to remain on standby for the following day. Fortunately we were not required.

14th November 2009 1752hrs Levers Water SD282993

A small party of 2 became lost in mist and darkness around Levers Water. They were soon located and brought down to the base by landrover. Nice quick call out so tea wasn't interrupted too much.

26th October 2009 1230hrs The Scrows SD291979

Nice local call out this above village. A female walker slipped on wet ground and sustained an injury to her right ankle. She was stretchered to the waiting landrover, taken to base and then on to hospital by ambulance.

17th October 2009 1515hrs Coniston Old Man SD273977

A female walker suffered from vertigo when nearing the summit of the Old Man and couldn't move. Fortunately a team member was already in the area and able to encourage her to carry on. The rest of the team met up with the party of 4 whilst they were descending to Low Water and accompanied to the waiting landrover. The casualty who recovered fully once on her way down, gave our member who had pursuaded her to continue, a hug, before she and her family enjoyed the ride back off the fell.

20th September 2009 2045hrs Dow Crag SD264977

Two climbers were reported missing on Dow Crag.18 members of the team responded initially thinking this could be a serious incident. However, the two men had actually climbed off route which had delayed them, resulting in them becoming benighted. They were located safe and well in one of the gullys and accompanied to safety. A good outcome on a dry night.

13th September 2009 2040hrs Brossen Stone Quarry SD281976

A pleasant enough call out to a family of 4 who had simply got caught out by the failing light. Whilst descending The Old Man, they lost the track after having decided to head straight down the fell. The use of photo flashes from a mobile phone, and the advantage of a beautiful clear evening, meant that the team soon located the all family members. They were escorted down the high bracken-fested fellside to the waiting landrover.

2nd September 2009 1740hrs Swirl How area NY274009

Another long wet one in thick mist ! A party of 7 were descending the fellside when one female member slipped approx. 100ft hurting her back and knee. The main feature given as identifying where they were, was the sighting of an engine in a beck. Much discussion went on as to the location of engines in the area and whether they were indeed still there or not !!! When the party was found, the casualty was immediately reassured and checked over whilst other members were put into a survival tent to keep warm and dry. Due to the possible back injury the casualty was put in a vacuum splint. Because of the steepness of the terrain the stretcher was lowered with the use of ropes before being carried down into Greenburn where members of Langdale and Ambleside MRT met up with Coniston MRT to assist. In the meantime other members of the party were escorted round Prison Band before descending to Levers Water, where our landrover was waiting to take them to base. I think my words "just round the corner" in answer to the question "How far to the main track?" took on a different meaning last night. Please forgive me girls !! The casualty was taken by ambulance to hospital and the family reunited.

27th August 2009 1310hrs Tilberthwaite Ghyll NY303008

We were asked to assist the Air Ambulance and Ambulance Service who had gone to the aid of an elderly lady. She had fainted whilst walking along the track but had recovered consciousness when we arrived. An easy one this as paramedics were already in attendance and so all we had to do was a shortish stretcher carry, down hill with a light casualty. The ambulance was already waiting at Tilberthwaite Cottages.

26th August 2009 1425 hrs Furness Fells SD300995

A party of 6 youngsters were doing their Duke of Edinburgh Award. In thick mist and rain they wandered from the main track and became lost. One girl was suffering possibly from hypothermia so they put tents up and called for assistance. We line searched the fells in the area we thought they could be. It wasn't a pleasant place to be if one had become geographically misplaced !! Visibility was poor and it was wet and windy in places. Fortunately they were found pretty soon thanks to the tent sighting, and one of the party was certainly suffering from hypothermia. She was put in a casualty bag to keep warm and the camp was broken so that all members of the party could be accompanied off the fells in safety. She was stretchered to the waiting landrover….another long wet and slippery carry. An ambulance arrived at the base to take her to hospital. The rest of the youngsters were fine and reunited with one of their teachers. Let’s hope our boots get time to dry off again before the next call out.

25th August 2009 1450 hrs Spion Kop, Coniston Old Man, SD275978

Local Border Collie fell 20' down a mine shaft. Initial checking suggested possible broken leg. She was wrapped snugly in a blanket before being carried to the top of the shaft. We stretchered her down to the landrover (much easier carrying a dog than a human casualty !!) and took her to the base where her owner took her to the vet. She has had an operation to mend her broken femur and is stable for the time being.

19th August 2009 1745 hrs Goats Hawse SD266981

Not Again !!!!

2nd Call Out of the afternoon. Young lad had slipped and injured his knee. This was another long walk in and even longer walk out. It was too misty for us get get helicopter assistance so we had to stretcher him back down to the waiting landrover on Walna Scar. It was raining, water was flowing down the track and we had to negotiate the boulders along the side of Goats Water. Great fun. An ambulance was waiting at the rescue base and the casualty was taken to Furness General. A very wet call out which took nearly 4 hours.

19th August 2009 1630 hrs Church Beck SD294983

13th August 2009 1240 hrs Goats Hause SD266983

We were called out to a male walker who had slipped on a rock and possibly broken his right ankle. This was a tough long walk in carrying the gear up to the Hause. As such, the helicopter had already landed by the time we arrived (well, they have wings sort of..I wish we did !). We stretchered the man to the helicopter before returning to the landrover left on Walna Scar. Had a second casualty on arrival at the base when one of the members fell out of the back of the landrover with severe cramp. We showed the necessary concern then went to look for the Mars Bars.

5th August 2009 1140 hrs Low Water

Whistles and cries for help were heard near Low Water. Landrover took Team members to Windy Gap. They then trudged up to the tarn with ropes and First Aid Sack where one group of walkers confirmed hearing whistle blasts but none had been heard since the first report. The area was searched from above Low Water Beck whilst other team members scoured the area from below. Since no further noises were heard and as it was a very clear day with a good breeze coming from the direction of the whistles, it was deduced that this could have been a false alarm. The whistles could have been a farmer, another peregrine falcon (see previous call out)or if a person had been in trouble then he/she had been able to sort themselves out. There were many people on the fells so it would have been hard not to notice someone in difficulty. Good intentions by the person who first reported this.
